Exam Stress and Vata: Why What Your Student Eats Matters More Than Study Hours

A friend called about her daughter.

"Two months to boards. She has stopped eating properly. Says she feels sick before every mock test."

Then the detail that mattered.

Breakfast is coffee. Lunch is skipped. Dinner is at eleven.

Exam stress is not only in the head. It shows up as a very particular pattern.

Dry mouth. Cold hands. Racing thoughts. No appetite, then hunger at midnight. Thin sleep.

That is vata. Movement without an anchor.

And what do we hand a stressed student?

Black coffee. Energy drinks. Dry biscuits. Cold packaged food. Irregular hours.

Every one of those is light, dry, cold and erratic. We are feeding the exact quality already out of control.

The correction is unglamorous.

Warm food, cooked, a little oily, mildly sweet, at fixed times. Khichdi with ghee beats a protein bar every evening of the week.

"Swadvamla-lavanah vatam"

Ashtanga Hridaya, Sutrasthana 1

Sweet, sour and salty tastes pacify vata.

And the timing matters as much as the food. The body calms down when it can predict you.

One warm cooked meal today, at the same hour it was eaten yesterday.

You cannot think clearly on an empty, cold, unpredictable stomach. No student ever has.
